Major Program Accomplishments or Outputs

The Ohio Farm Bureau (OFB) network is the main Ohio AITC delivery system. 84 of 87 county Farm Bureaus have a Communications Action Team in place which includes education outreach.

The OurOhio.org website includes a teacher section of lessons matched to short articles, often with supplemental videos, and houses the eLetter for teachers. New,is the enhanced list of Top 200 crops and animals with definitions and photos. Other sections of the website have info that teachers and students find relevan. The Our Ohio website had 252,548 unique visitors in 2010 with more than 11,700 views of teacher and student pages.

Twelve new student activities were added to the Our Ohio website this year. Our Ohio Student Activities are written by a classroom teacher who takes stories from Our Ohio magazine and develops at-home lessons that meet Ohio Academic Content Standards.

OFBF has uploaded more than 50 videos to TeacherTube with more than 20,670 views for the year, to counter the blocking of YouTube videos by schools. WatchKnow website is also used as a distribution channel for the Our Ohio PBS videos.

Subscriptions to the free bi-monthly teacher e-letter were 1,330 subscribers up from 900 a year ago. 30 urban dist. teachers learned about careers in ag, biotech and the science of ag during three days of professional development at the OSU/CFAES. A unique educational resource was sent to 333 teachers who are current FB members. More than 500 5-6 gr students learned about agriculture at the OSU in an all-day program. A pilot program was conducted with four FCS high school teachers and their students. Farmers shared healthy, locally grown foods with the students and talked about the many facets of the food industry. The annual book award was Mini Milk Maids on the Mooove which was included in a book bundle. 500 book bundles were placed in schools and libraries.

More than 10,000 children planted a flower and took it home at the Ohio State Fair.

Major Program Impacts or Outcomes

97 percent (84 of 87) of the counties conducted education programs. 48 percent increase in number of teachers signed up for the bimonthly eLetter.

20, 670 views of Our Ohio PBS television segments on TeacherTube, a new avenue for distribution of educational videos this year.

More than 11,300 views of teacher and student pages of the Our Ohio website this year that had more than 252,548 unique visitors in total for 2010.

Over 500 students and 30 teachers learned about agriculture first-hand at the land grant university with support from OFB.

Volunteers placed 500 book bundles of accurate books about agriculture for children in schools and libraries.

Biosketch

Judy Roush works for the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation as Education Specialist. She specializes in educational projects including professional development workshops for teachers. Judy is also the Ohio Agriculture in the Classroom state contact. Prior to joining Ohio Farm Bureau in 1997, Judy served for 10 years as executive director of the Ohio Agriculture Awareness Council, the group who formerly managed Ohio's Agriculture in the Classroom program.

Judy graduated from Ohio State University and taught high school early in her career. She and her husband own a seed and gravel business in central Ohio.
