Agenda

The 2014 Maine Agriculture in the Classroom Summer Teachers Institute will be held at Unity College on August 4 – 8 with 36 contact hours or 3.6 CEU’s available for recertification. The week will start with curriculum sessions at Unity College focused on STEM applications using agriculture, Social Studies Lessons, online resources and professional development opportunities to earn CEU’s right from your home classroom. All participants will leave these sessions with armloads of materials and megabytes of technology integrating agriculture into your classes from PreK – 12th grade. [In many cases separate sessions are planned for elementary & secondary educators.]

On Wednesday and Thursday the entire group will tour farms, aquaculture facilities, school agriculture programs and Maine Ag based businesses. Teachers will learn more about locally grown foods, their impact on the Maine economy, applications in science and gain opportunities to integrate agriculture into the core curriculum.

Then on Friday morning you will visit the Maine Academy of Natural Science and the new KVCC Agriculture program, both based at the site that was formally Goodwill Hinckley School. We will finish the Institute at lunch with the teachers enrolled in the KVCC Dual Credit Agr101 program continuing for the afternoon, using information they have gathered during the week.

The cost of the entire week, including meals, all materials and lodging, is only $200 due to sponsorships from the Maine Wild Photo Blueberry Commission, Maine Potato Board, The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry AND the Specialty Agriculture License Plate!

For a schedule framework and registration form, please go to our website www.MaineAgintheClassroom.org Scholarships are available for $150 based on need, on a first come basis.
