Monsanto Outreach For Agriculture Grant Program
At the 2004 National AITC Conference, a unique program was announced as a joint venture between Monsanto and the National AITC Consortium. Monsanto, with a clear commitment to Agriculture Literacy, granted the National AITC Consortium $50,000 to be used for grants to State AITC Program over the next 3 years. Today, we announce the first winners of this grant program. We are pleased with the to work with Monsanto Representatives Kerry Preete, Vice President US Crop Production; Doug Schemmer, Global Industry Affairs Corn; Julie Doane US Customer Outreach Lead; and Kristen Sebben, Special Projects Director.

"Alaska AITC K-12 Educator e-Learning Professional Development Project"
Nine teachers completed the first online course, which began in February. The online structure was used to offer credits to another 10 teachers following an in-person workshop on April 1. Those teachers will complete their work this month. A second online course will be offered in the fall, incorporating improvements and changes suggested by the teachers. The online structure will also allow for-credit options for the four in-person workshops to be scheduled this fall with AITC Consortium grant funds.

"Florida Agriculture Literacy Day"
More than 1,300 farmers, ranchers and other agriculture industry volunteers read to more than 75,000 Florida elementary school students in honor of Florida Agriculture Literacy Day 2006. Though March 16 had been selected as Agriculture Literacy Day, many of these agriculture industry volunteers read after that day and read to several different classrooms. Florida Agriculture in the Classroom was able to purchase more books and develop lessons for each book thanks to a grant it received from Monsanto. Teachers gave the event high marks in the evaluations they returned. The chldren's books selected for this year's event: "Til the Cows Come Home" by Jodi Icenoggle and "Pig and Crow" by Kay Chorao.

"What The Heck Can You Do With Biotech"
The workshop "What the Heck is Biotech" targeted at South Dakota teachers was scheduled for June 12-14, 2006. AS of June 9, 12 teachers are registered. The workshop will consist of hands-on biotech activities, tours, a "Meet The Experts" panel and an issue debate at the conclusion. Details of this workshop were shared in depth during Mini-Workshop #3 at 9:15 am on Friday, June 23rd.
