Maine School Garden Day 2012 will be held at Buckfield Jr. / Sr. High School on April 28th. Teachers and educators from schools across the state will be participating in this event promoting school gardens. In 2011 over 100 educators attended this event in Waldoboro. One teacher remarked, "This is an incredible day where you can learn so much about making a school garden really valuable for our students! Hands on, real-life lessons that satisfy standards! It’s a win-win situation!"
The workshop will begin at 8:00 AM and finish at 3:30 PM. There will be morning coffee service and a "local foods" lunch. The cost will be $30 before April 7th and $40 after that deadline. (Scholarships are available.) Participants will be awarded 7 contact hours or .7 CEU’s from the University of Maine.
Classes throughout the day will focus on topics such as How to start a School Garden, How to grow crops in Maine year-round, what crops to grow, and How much to plant. Through a partnership with Oxford County Cooperative Extension and the Maine School Garden Network, Maine Ag in the Classroom is pleased to offer this timely program for educators that are interested in starting or growing a garden program.
A mid-day session will use a panel of existing Maine school garden experts that will share their programs and answer questions. Other topics include Heritage Seed Saving with Medomak Valley teacher Neil Lash, Food Safety, Worm Composting, Bee Keeping and many more.
The Buckfield garden teachers were the 2011 MAITC Teachers of the Year and were recognized nationally as one of 5 winners of the AITC Excellence in Teaching About Agriculture Award. To see their garden and learn more about the program, click here.
